Almost Here

Getting ready for a convention can be nerve wracking. It can also be very exciting.

ConGlomeration is only days away and we want to make sure we have everything ready. The convention is supplying the tables, but my hubby wants to bring one of our own tables, just in case. It doesn’t take up much room in the van. As long as it makes him feel better, I’m good with it. Think of it as an extra-large safety blanket. We have everyone’s books, the promotional items, and the tickets. Even if we forgot the tickets, I have a backup copy in my email.

Yes, I’m ridiculously organized, but the best organizer can still forget things. With any luck, it will be something small, like the mustard. We don’t need mustard, but I think that was the only thing my mother ever forgot when packing for the family camping trips.

What did I do? The convention starts Friday and I forgot to pack clothes for the weekend.

It’s time to do the laundry.

New Covers

Emerald Tears and Hands of Onyx are getting a makeover.

They look great.

Julian M. Norwood is a wonderful artist.

FYI – You don’t have to read the Sav’ine books in order. My brain isn’t letting me write them that way. Each story stands on its own.

I believe the only change anyone will see on the Diamond Mind cover is the font.

The Sons of Amethyst cover is wonderful.

I’ve figured it out

20131005-135359.jpg

Yes, I’ve figured out why I cannot stand present tense in a novel. It reminds me of writing screenplays and watching television.

Let me explain.

Some time ago, I decided to try writing a screenplay. What I found, was that screenwriting is a very different animal from novel writing. Screenplays are all written in present tense. Which means everything is happening right now. Not yesterday, not last year, not even five minutes ago. You’re sitting on the characters shoulder watching things unfold with them. It’s like sitting in front of a television screen.

There is only one problem with that for me. I don’t care for television.

Some people might think that’s weird, but I would rather curl up with a good book. My husband is the same way. The TV is rarely on at our house. We don’t even have cable.

Where am I going with this post?

When you are writing, think about how you want your story written.

  • Does present tense work better then past?
  • Does a first person narrative sound better, or is it too constrictive making third person the obvious route?

These things might seem minor, but they can make a big impact to your work.

Try altering a page or two of your favorite story and see the difference it makes.
